Plateau has taken over prosecution of 19 suspects in Alkali’s murder

The Plateau State Government has taken over the prosecution of suspects accused of killing a former Chief of Administration in the Nigeria Army, Gen. Idris Alkali,
whose lifeless body was recovered inside an abandoned well in Jos South Local Government Area of the state recently. This was disclosed by the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr D.T. Timour, at the resumed hearing of the case in Jos on Monday. The police handling the case had earlier arraigned 19 suspects in court in October this year over the killing of the retired senior Army officer.
Since then, the suspects have been remanded in prison custody But when the case file was called on Monday at the resumed hearing at Court 5 in Jos, the DPP, applied to take over the matter from the police. He said that the oral application was pursuant to Section 211 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 120 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, which he said, gave power to the Attorney General of a state to take over such matters. He also told the court that he was aware that there was a new application before the court seeking for the amendment of earlier charges and another application for the bail of the accused persons. The DPP also prayed the court to grant him time to enable him to study the case file.
